Why I Switched from Wix to Showit

If you have been following me for a while, you might have noticed that my website went under a complete transformation in 2021! 

And with that transformation came with a website platform change. 

Yes, I moved my website from Wix to Showit. 

And as someone who had been using Wix for two years previously with different businesses and blogs, I feel like I have an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the two platforms. 

So because I now choose to design custom websites exclusively on the Showit platform, I wanted to share with you the top reasons why I left Wix and became a dedicated Showit advocator. 

And let me note here, I am not affiliated with Showit. I don’t even think they have an affiliate program as far as I’m aware. Just a huge fan over here! 

Let’s get into it: 

Not Limited to Design and Function of Elements 

I would say this is the number one reason I made the switch off of Wix and onto Showit, so we will start here. 

While both platforms are drag and drop builders, you are much more limited to what you can actually get things to look like on Wix. 

The designs of Wix’s “add-on” elements (such as testimonial sliders, FAQ section, menus, contact forms, etc) are pre-made and have little options to fully customize outside of colours and fonts. 

And while this might be a pro if you’re just looking to get info on a page as soon as possible, as a designer, this was a huge con and ultimately a roadblock for my website on Wix. 

Because on Showit none of this is pre-built for you, you have complete creative freedom over designing these elements from the ground up. 

Customer Service and Showit User Community 

Have you ever been able to contact anyone at Wix when you have a specific-to-you question? 

Me neither. 

In fact, I’ve never been able to get a hold of anyone at Wix EVER in my 2 years of using the platform. 

Not only does Showit use a chat box for quick and direct access to the lovely customer service team, there is an entire Facebook community of over 10k “Showiteers” that are more than happy to share their knowledge and lend a hand outside Showit support hours. 

The longest wait time I’ve had from Showit support is 72 hours (and yes, that was over a holiday!). 

And on top of that, Showit basically held my hand through the entire process of moving from Wix to Showit making the whole transfer process seamless. 

Unlimited Blog Design Option 

My first introduction to Wix was back in 2018 when I decided to launch a stay-at-home-travel-blog (in case you’re wondering it didn’t take off lol). 

And after seeing endless average-at-best travel blog designs, I decided mine was going to look the best. “Hey I’m not travelling anywhere on my travel blog but at least it looks good!” was my thoughts behind that…

So like many DIY new business owners, I launched my blog on Wix. 

The rest of the website was custom drag and drop, so I figured the blog would be too, right?

Wrong. 

Now let me tell you, I can spot a Wix blog a MILE away. The customization is painfully limited. 

And yes, any successful blogger will tell you that a blog doesn’t have to look good to do good, and while I do totally agree, I started my own design business for things to infact look good, speak to your messaging and values, and attract your ideal audience, and in turn make you more money.

So if the rest of your website is going to be on-brand AF then your blog needs to be too. 

And while I don’t totally recommend Showit if your main purpose is to become a blogger, but rather if you want to use your blog to educate your audience, promote your work or courses or make a few affiliate sales! 

Power of WordPress for Blogging and SEO

I’m going to start off here by saying that everyone gives Wix a really bad wrap for SEO. 

From my personal experience, Wix has come a long way and even has a built in SEO walk-through to get you started. 

BUT, that being said, Wix SEO cannot be matched to the power combo of Showit and WordPress. 

WordPress is one of the most widely used platforms for blogging on the internet. And Showit has partnered with them to create a powerful custom designed blogging experience.

Now let me quickly say that I have also had a blog on WordPress, which was also incredibly impossible to customize. I won’t get too much into this because this post is about Wix! Not WordPress. 

But the power and tools of blogging on WordPress are truly irreplace. With the Basic Blog Plan you get access to just the plug-ins you need, such as Yoast SEO, and with the custom design of Showit leading your blog, it really is a perfect match. 

The Dark Side of an “All in One” Platform

When you’re just starting out, it might seem like having an “all-in-one” platform is the best thing that could happen! No tough comparisons, research or techy integrations… 

But the truth is, an all in one platform ultimately means you don’t have complete control over your website, and of course that means no control over your options. 

A good example of this is that Wix has a built in e-commerce platform, but it doesn’t mean that it is the best platform for you and your business. 

Showit on the other hand integrates with multiple platforms including Shopify, WooCommerce, and ThriveCart. 

With the numerous apps Wix also seems to have available, almost all of them require costly paid upgrades, and they are usually only developed for Wix, so you cannot compare them to something else that might work better for your business. 

And I will end this with saying that having everything on one platform means you’re basically stuck there, and it will be down right next to impossible to transfer once you’re in deep if you ever decide to leave.

Thankfully, I got out before I ever got attached.

Now remember this is my experience with Wix and moving to Showit. I encourage you to do your research and ultimately decide what is best for you and your business whatever stage you’re in. 

Wix is a decent beginners option if you want to DIY everything, and just need to get words on a page and launch as quickly as possible without enlisting help from anyone else. 

But if you’re ready to fully invest in a custom website that speaks to your values and your audience, you can enlist the help of a designer (like me!) and still be able to make updates yourself.
